How to Properly Install a Launcher Grip (Without Tearing It)
Installing a Hogue grip on your compact launcher may seem straightforward, but doing it incorrectly can quickly lead to a torn grip, poor fit, or unnecessary frustration. In this guide and the accompanying video, we walk through the recommended method to install a grip safely, cleanly, and without damage.
Whether you’re replacing a worn grip or upgrading for better control, following these steps will ensure a professional result.
Step 1: Safety First, Always
Before starting any work, confirm the launcher is completely unloaded.
There should be no CO₂ and no projectile in the chambers. This step is non-negotiable and should always be verified visually and physically before handling.
Step 2: Soften the Grip
Grip material is designed to stretch, but only when properly prepared.
- Place the grip into near-boiling water for a few minutes.
- This softens the material and makes it pliable enough to stretch without tearing.
Avoid skipping this step as installing a cold grip significantly increases the chance of damage.
Step 3: Prepare the Launcher Handle
While the grip is soaking:
- Remove the magazine.
- Lightly spray the outer surface of the launcher handle with window cleaner.
Window cleaner works well because it provides temporary lubrication and evaporates quickly, leaving no residue behind.
Step 4: Position the Launcher
Lay the launcher on its back, pointing toward you, and rest it on a padded or soft surface. This stabilizes the launcher and protects the finish during installation.
Step 5: Lubricate the Grip
Once softened, spray the inside of the grip with window cleaner. This reduces friction and allows the grip to slide into place smoothly.
Step 6: Installation
Hold the grip with the duckbill facing down and away from you.
Hook the grip over the lubricated handle to start the install.
With your forefinger, pull the grip—still upside down—toward you, stretching it over the front of the handle.
Pull Past the Finger Groove
Once the grip is fully over the handle:
- Continue pulling downward.
- Ensure the finger groove passes the top of the handle.
This is a critical step for proper alignment.
Seat the Grip Fully
From inside the grip:
- Use both thumbs and forefingers to stretch outward.
- Pull down on the ducktail while pushing the grip out from the inside.
- Work evenly on both sides.
💡 Pro Tip: A blue shop towel has the right balance of grip and flexibility to help with this step.
⚠️ Important Warning: No Tools Ever
Under no circumstances should tools, pliers, levers, or hard objects be used during installation. Tools will tear the grip and permanently damage it.
If it doesn’t feel right, stop, re-lubricate, and reposition by hand.
Final Positioning
Once the grip is nearly seated, you can make small adjustments by hand to achieve the final, correct position. Take your time. Precision here improves comfort, control, and longevity.
